CANINE PARVO VIRUS (CPV)
CPV causes a systemic illness with primarily gastrointestional and immumololgic effects in puppies. CPV is characterized clinically by loss of energy, lethargy, inappetence, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and weight loss. Severe disease results in dehydration, sepsis, endotoxemia, DIC, acute repiratory distress syndrome and death. Most cases are seen between 6 weeks and 6 months of age. Rottweilers, Doberman pinschers, pit bulls, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, and English springer spaniels are more likely to get CPV. The incubation period is 3 -14 days. CPV is shed from sick dogs in the vomit and feces and it can live in the enviroment for a long time. The vaccination needs to be given before exposure and in a series to puppies to help prevent CPV. Because it is a virus veterianians try to keep the sick puppies a live while the virus runs its course.
On Saturday, April 19, 2008 a unvaccinated puppy was brought in with history of loss of energy, not eating, and vomiting. An Fecal ELISA test was preformed and a parvo positive result reveiled in less than 3 minutes. The owner and daughter were devestated at the possiblity of lossing this puppy and also it's litter mate at home. Dr. Snell had just received an email about a parvo tea (below) we wanted to try. We aslo sent them home with Organic Expeller-Pressed Coconut Oil, Willard Water, Parvo disinfectant, and a personal dilution bottle of Bach Flowers, Heal products, and Chinese Herbs.
On Monday the owner called and said the puppy was almost back to normal.
On the next Wednesday the owner said the first puppy was fine and the other puppy now had it and was being treated with the same things.
We are posting this in hopes to help save other sick puppies live!!!!
Emergency Tea Ingredients
The following ingredients can be found in most major supermarkets with
pharmacies:
- 1 cup of Pedialyte or Oat Water (electrolyte fluid)
- 2 tea bags of herbal Peppermint with Spearmint tea (a good source is Bigelow's Mint Medley). If the mixture is not available, find peppermint and spearmint teas separately and use 1 tea bag of each. If only one is available (e.g. Peppermint) use 2 tea bags. DO NOT GET TEA THAT CONTAINS CAFFEINE.
- 2 teabags of chamomile tea. DO NOT GET TEA THAT CONTAINS CAFFEINE.
- 2 capsules of Echinacea. (This can usually be found in the vitamin section near the pharmacy.)
- 2 teaspoons of finely chopped garlic. This needs to be fresh garlic, not dry. Garlic packaged in a jar sitting in water or oil is suitable. If your puppy has worms increase the garlic to 2 tablespoons.
Note:
- If you are using the tea in addition to Parvaid in an attempt to control nausea, you should remove the garlic from the recipe.
Preparing The Emergency Tea
- Heat 1 cup of Pedialyte or Oat Water until it is hot, but DO NOT BOIL IT.
- Add 2 tea bags of mint tea, 2 tea bags of chamomile tea, empty 2 capsules of Echinacea, and add 2 teaspoons of fresh garlic.
- Stir it well and let it cool for 20 minutes.
